Commonwealth Games Scotland

Summary

After developing the games specific brand for Team Scotland at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the brief from Team Scotland was to create a souvenir magazine to commemorate a games like no other. With over 250 inspirational athletes competing over 19 sports, Team Scotland wanted a publication which captured not only the essence of this spectacular event, but a moment in time. Stunning cover illustration created by illustrator Marcus Marritt sets the scene with a visual focus on unity and the spirit of the athletes coming together with pride in their country, truly “One Team.” We designed the 108-page magazine with the athletes front and centre. We believe the joy of print comes from the physical, immersive, authentic experience it provides, much like the experience of sport itself. Clean typography and a minimal colour palette for each spread allows our national heroes to shine. A deep dive into the athlete stories with clever use of colour, imagery and font choice highlight the emotion, dedication and energy displayed by our national athletes across a range of sports. The individual page layouts reflect the unique stories of the athletes and their personal journey to the games. Throughout the magazine we tell the story of the individual and collective journeys to the games, and the connections between the host city, Birmingham and our proud nation, Scotland. Stunning full-page photography shows the progress of the Queens baton relay around Scotland and highlights in glorious technicolour the people and places that make our country so special. The exceptional work of the talented fashion designer Siobhan MacKenzie is displayed across 6 full pages to show the contemporary take on tradition that makes her work on the award-winning team ceremony outfits so outstanding. The collective combination of these stories and images makes for a truly immersive look into the journey of the athletes and support staff who proudly represent our nation at the games. To ensure an extra special keepsake for athletes, their families, and visitors to Scotland House the magazine was thread sewn with a velvet touch front cover and the inside pages were printed on uncoated stock giving the pages a contemporary, premium matte finish.
