The Black Grape

Summary

The Black Grape, is a brand-new wine bar located in the old town of Edinburgh. In late 2022 the space underwent a dramatic transformation from a previously tired interior. Our aim at Splintr was to create a space that was elegant, modern and relaxed. Our design is characterised by sweeping curves, creating a sense of fluidity and movement throughout the space. This design choice is particularly striking in the upper seating area, where a flowing curved banquette runs under the windows. The lighting in the space is soft and warm, creating an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. It was important for us to ensure that the lighting complimented the sweeping curves of the design, seen most of all in the ambitious suspended oval raft that encompasses both lighting and plant display. Varying textures were an important aspect of our design. We used terrazzo, Foresso, fluted glass and locally sourced sycamore timber to create depth and visual interest in the space. The combination of these materials was carefully considered to create a cohesive, balanced look and a subtly vibrant colour scheme. It was important that this restaurant stood on its own, offering something visually different from the many nearby institutions. The design of The Black Grape is an example of design completely transforming a space. The restaurant space now has a whole new lease of life. The result is an elegant, contemporary interior that perfectly complements the wine and small plates on offer, creating a truly unique and unforgettable experience for customers.
