Summary
With the 23rd Commonwealth Games set to be a pioneering model both visually and sustainably, Scotland’s largest city was chosen to pave the way for future Games. Building on our 10-year partnership with Team Scotland, we were delighted to be asked to develop the branding and creative vision for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is the first games to showcase a new integrated concept featuring the celebration device from the Commonwealth Sport logo. The celebration mark captures the triumphant gestures of victorious athletes, speaking of the passion and dedication that drive the movement. The three coloured V shapes suggest the way in which the Commonwealth continents, and the rich diversity of their cultures, come together through the spirit of sport. The Commonwealth Sport modern logo was designed by award-winning brand agency rbl.
Our challenge was to work within the new framework and create a brand identity that truly reflects the spirit of Glasgow and the enduring values of the Commonwealth Sport movement.
The logo is our love letter to Glasgow with elements of the River Clyde, The Clyde Arc and the Finnieston Crane coming together in a fusion of architecture and culture at the central hub within the celebration device of Commonwealth Sport.
The River Clyde serves as the heart of Glasgow, playing a pivotal role in the city’s history, economy, and culture. The Glasgow Clyde Arc, often referred to as the Squinty Bridge due to its distinctive curved shape, is a vital piece of infrastructure that spans the River Clyde. The Finnieston Crane, as a preserved historic monument, provides a tangible link to Glasgow’s industrial past while standing amid modern developments, symbolising the city’s ongoing evolution. The simplified shapes of the city’s three iconic landmarks combine to create the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games logo and graphic elements. The Glasgow graphic elements are used to create interesting and powerful visuals, forming a fully flexible brand identity that reflects the electrifying, beating heart of the city.
The vibrant hues of Scotland are captured in a contemporary style within the primary colour palette. The gradient represents the fusion of cultures at the hub, with the colours of the Clyde Waterfront merging in a dynamic flurry of activity. A dazzling secondary colour palette and the use of graphic elements contained within the logo ensures a brand look and feel which is both visually engaging and flexible.
