Summary

The 5th bar and restaurant delivered by Mosaic Architecture + design for scoop restaurant group. Sebbs is a basement bar and open kitchen within Glasgow’s city centre. The Client knew from the minute we first viewed our property at 68 Miller Street that the basement needed to be a bar and restaurant with its own distinct identity, separate to the larger restaurant space above, which is now Margo.

The brief, to design a space that evolves as the as the night goes on, So the idea for Sebb’s (sixty eight basement bar) was born, Sebb’s serves food cooked over fire, wine on tap, cocktails created in a dedicated cocktail lab and has a strong focus on music, with a curated selection of DJs playing in on a sound system which is the focal point at the end of the central brick arch.
Mosaic looked at the jazz Kissa cafes of Japan and the listening bars of Europe as a source of concept inspiration. Timber herringbone floors were chosen to give richness and juxtapose to the brick arched soffit. For material inspiration mosaic looked closer to home, materials such as the red leather, sapele veneer, fire place tiles, artichoke Formica laminates make reference to and homage Glasgow’s vintage watering holes and dance halls, such as The Star Bar and the Barrowland Ballroom.
The rear of the dining area has a bespoke designed DJ booth and library wall for vinyl records. All of the furniture within this area has been designed to be removable creating an open floor area that can be used as a stage or dance floor.
We introduced A-Live to the project who install sound systems for nightclubs and festivals around the world to deliver a serious audio set-up for the space, recording studio style corrugated foam surrounding the DJ booth and dotted around the space adds to the listening bar feel. On the layout. The team worked with some challenging structural constraints to consolidate various columns and walls into the open kitchen layout.
