Summary
LightMedium was commissioned to design the lighting for World in Words, a new permanent exhibition showcasing Norse saga manuscripts at the Árni Magnússon Institute. The exhibition, designed by Studio MB, presents a nationally significant collection with a strong emphasis on conservation, clarity, and atmosphere.
We worked closely with curators, the client, and contractors to deliver a lighting scheme that balances conservation requirements with dramatic visual storytelling. The design includes a combination of track-mounted fixtures, precision framing projectors, and custom case-integrated lighting.
Bespoke conservation lighting was developed in collaboration with Stoane Lighting, featuring BLE technology. Each case includes mini tracks with integrated sensors that adjust light levels as visitors approach, reducing unnecessary light exposure while allowing full control and monitoring of lux levels.
Interpretation graphics were lit with sharp precision, enhancing readability and contrast in the exhibition’s low ambient light conditions. Framing optics ensured no light bleed onto adjacent AV installations, and glare was minimized using honeycomb louvres set against a black metal ceiling structure.
The result is a carefully balanced, responsive lighting environment that supports both the preservation and presentation of these treasured manuscripts.
