Summary
Nicholas graduated from Strathclyde University with an M(Arch) in Advanced Architectural Design in 2014 and qualified as an Architect in 2017. He has worked for architectural practices in Dublin, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow, gaining experience in private residential, education and commercial sectors.
After leaving university, Nicholas felt a lack of knowledge of building was hindering his progression. In 2015 he purchased a derelict traditional farm cottage carrying out much of the work himself to create a thoughtfully adapted and environmentally sustainable family home. He wanted to learn as many building techniques as possible, to understand the intricacies of each individual trade involved in a building project. This knowledge is appreciated by contractors and has helped foster strong working relationships.
Nicholas feels strongly in the uniqueness of Architecture, believing architecture must always reflect the age and cultural context that produced it. Nicholas’ work is composed as a contemporary interpretation of the Scottish vernacular providing sensitive, elegant buildings which are distinctly of their time. He primarily focuses on the private residential sector, completing award winning bespoke new build homes, contemporary extensions and building conservation. Nicholas was Project Architect for the recently completed renovation of Bonnie Blink, which was featured on George Clarke’s Building Home series. This project showcases his ability to carefully adapt traditional architecture for modern living.
In 2021, he established Nicholas Lindsay Architects, with the aim of creating a design focused practice working on a limited number of bespoke projects. Nicholas chooses to keep the practice small, focusing on team collaboration, maintaining a strong Client connection and having a direct input on all projects. Under Nicholas’ guidance the studio has worked on and delivered projects all over Scotland. The studio was recently included in the Urban Realm Top 100 Scottish Architectural Practices. The main avenue for new commissions is by word of mouth and recommendations from current and former Clients. Nicholas does not actively engage in self-promotion, and it is clear his reputation has spread throughout Scotland.
Nicholas promotes a good work-life balance, encouraging working from home and flexible hours for the team. This along with regular office gatherings helps to foster a pleasant and comfortable environment to work. Nicholas also mentors younger, less experienced staff within the office when working towards their Part 3 qualification, who all value his guidance and calm approach to running a business and the role of Contract Administrator.
