The Design Museum is breaking out into new demographics with the launch of a more-than-human exhibition dedicated to overlooked corners of the living world.

140 works include artwork for octopuses, a pavilion for multispecies encounters and a seaweed installation to shatter the human-centric world around us.

Intended to open up new avenues of creativity by looking beyond bipedal motion and opposable thumbs the exhibition promotes the need for greater awareness of specific eco-systems and the species which call them home.

Highlights include a tapestry by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg depicting a flower meadow from the perspective of pollinators and the Kelp Council, a group of seaweed sculptures crafted by Julia Lohmann.

Tim Marlow, director and CEO of the Design Museum commented: “It’s important for museums and cultural institutions to respond to the complex issues facing our planet and society at present. It’s also important to shift perspectives from a human-centric view of the world to one closer to nature which will make this a landmark exhibition in every sense.”

More than 50 participants have contributed to the exhibition including Ant Farm, Marcus Coates, Dunne & Raby, Forensic Architecture, Formafantasma, Andrés Jaque, Kate Orff/Scape, Solange Pessoa, Reef Design Lab, Diana Scherer and DnA_Design and Architecture.

More Than Human opens on 11 July and runs to 5 October at the Design Museum, London.
