Summary

At the core of this project was the need to create a dynamic new website that reflected the distinctive new visual identity and the contemporary and creative nature of the Talbot Rice Gallery exhibitions programme, establishing and reinforcing the TRG’s position alongside its contemporaries within the sector. The new site is a central visualisation of that new identity – portraying a world leading national and international University art gallery. The goal of the website was to increase the impact of the TRG’s work by becoming more visible in the UK contemporary art scene and exposing the caliber of their work and the standard of creativity in the exhibitions. Another goal was to develop the scale of international knowledge and engagement with their work. With a focus on adopting a usercentric approach to structure and navigation, establishing a positive user experience, the streamlined navigation is supported by section specific secondary navigation to create intuitive user journeys throughout the different areas of the new website. The visual approach is tailored to give as much space and emphasis to the artwork and exhibitions as possible while balanced with strong typographic structure and treatment. Large content areas accommodate detailed information and  are supported by related or featured content to encourage continued user journeys and expose all that the TRG has to offer and the work they do.A minimal brand colour palette, along with subtle interactions and animations, again keeps the emphasis on the artwork and exhibition imagery. We used layered type over imagery and background image hover states to create depth to the online content, and to achieve a more engaging and visually interactive user experience. Our aim was to deliver a highly distinctive and dynamic website for the TRG that would provide a platform to increase awareness of them globally, whilst also focusing on accessibility to ensure the content was functional for all users – ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standard. We also developed a robust and consistent pattern library to allow for future developments, so as to retain the strong visual design and layout that now makes the Talbot Rice Gallery stand out online.
