Summary

We were tasked by the client to create a series of bespoke typefaces to accompany their new brand identity. The identity was created to reflect their principles as a design studio, creativity, passion and storytelling and the typefaces for use on the identity were required to provide the same function. The vision of the identity was to create a series of typefaces for the system that were flexible and adaptable, but still communicated through a consistent graphic language. Each typeface has been created in caps only and with a consistent X height to enable to combination of characters while maintaining a coherent look, feel and scale. The faces are inspired by powerful stories that have not just shaped the footballing world but wider society, culture and lifestyle. It was important to the client to tell stories that mattered and we have drawn visual inspiration from each of the chosen stories to inform each typeface and provide a visual framework for the whole brand identity.Collina -  A typeface inspired by the shirt numbers popularly used during the career of the world’s most famous referee.Golden Team – The characters of this typeface were developed from the hand cut shirt numbers of the Hungarian national team who helped define modern football.La Bombonera – The club name, Boca, is created in the stands at the stadium using painted seats to spell out the name and this face has been developed from the geometric pattern of the seating.Makana – This typeface is built from the original hand painted lettering on the sign at Robben Island prison during the South African Apartheid regime.Predator – A typeface adapted and modified from the original Predator identity for the iconic boot.Rose – The Rose face is a development of mid-century fonts used by the shirt sponsors of the only professional Scottish footballer to have won the World Cup.Schlee – This typeface was inspired by the writer, illustrator and designer who created the iconic Brazil kit, with the design being developed from the hand sewn lettering on the shirts used in the final of the 1958 World Cup. Telstar – The characters of this font are an expansion of the identity created for the iconic and definitive ball design, first seen in the 1970 World Cup.Yashin – The Yashin typeface is adapted from the hand cut lettering applied to mid-century Soviet era national kits.
