ARCHITECTURE: Building Re-use

Edinburgh Printmakers

Award

The Edinburgh Printmakers creative hub is located within what once was the headquarters of the North British Rubber Company (NBRC). Our project involved the redevelopment of this derelict building into a multi-use arts complex centred around printmaking production.  The NBRC building is the only surviving structure from the once large and important nineteenth century Castle Mills industrial complex. At its height, NBRC employed over three thousand people and produced a vast array of rubber products, including the famous Hunter welly […]

Faithlie Centre

Award

As a crucial anchor within the Town Centre Conservation Area, the Category B Listed 1 Saltoun Square has been extensively restored and simultaneously expanded into the adjacent and formerly dilapidated police station, significantly increasing capacity. A third component, a new build extension to the rear, performs the function of binding these two existing buildings together, serving as both a means of unencumbered access to all levels and a new ‘front of house’ to council services. Vertical and horizontal circulation, meeting […]

Bell Street Stables

Commendation

Bell Street Stables is a Grade B Listed 1890s industrial building in Calton, Glasgow, built to house the cleansing department including its many Clydesdale horses. The brief was to convert the building into 52 mid-market affordable rent flats. Whilst externally the building presents a modest attractive façade the internal organisation and circulation related to its industrial past was remarkable. Circulation was designed for use by horses including a cobbled courtyard, a unique large horse scale ramp to all floors and […]

Kyle House

Nomination

Located at the southern end of the Kyle of Tongue in Sutherland, Kyle House sits on an elevated site with uninterrupted views in all directions. It is a humble, peaceful, low-energy house, built to last for generations and perfect for two people to live slowly and comfortably while immersing themselves in the dramatic, natural setting.  The building dates from the early to mid-19th Century, appearing on the first Ordnance Survey map of the area, dating from 1874. It is believed […]

CoDE Pod Hostel – The Court

Nomination

1A Parliament Square is an A-Listed building in the centre of Edinburgh’s Old Town, originally designed as police chambers with holding cells and court room facilities. Latterly, the building has been used as temporary accommodation, serving as offices for the council. CoDE appreciated from an early stage that the building would offer an ideal canvas for their brand of Pod accommodation, requiring few internal alterations. Steeped in character and history with original features remaining, the unique concept of a courthouse/jail […]

Hill Street Conversion

Nomination

Sitting on the corner of Hill Street and Middleton Street since the 1930’s the former police station has come to be a local landmark in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire. However, after shutting its doors to the public in 2013 it fell into disrepair and needed to be repurposed. Proposals by others to demolish the unlisted building and start again, in order to maximise potential units on the site, were objected to by the community and council. Clark Design Architecture and Bingham […]

Watt Institution

Nomination

The Grade ‘A’ Listed Watt Institution is an important building historically, civically, socially and culturally. It houses archives, locally bequeathed artefacts and world class artwork.  The building consists of a museum, art gallery and library along with a large hall for temporary exhibitions and community events. Over time the fabric of the building had deteriorated to the point where both the building and its contents were being irreparably damaged.  Inverclyde Council had an extremely limited budget to address the situation […]

Gairloch Heritage Museum

Nomination

The Museum occupies what was to be an Anti-Aircraft Operations Room (AAOR); a concrete box inside a concrete box, built to withstand the effects of an H bomb. This extraordinarily tough construction required care and ingenuity to achieve the user needs and environmental conditions demanded by the collections. The exterior treatment respects the monolithic block of the AAOR. The interior was grit-blasted back to the original concrete. The Museum’s previous “make do” location was unsatisfactory with chronic maintenance and accessibility […]
